Kon Fang
Kon Fang is a Chinese artist based in New York City. He is currently pursuing an MFA in Printmaking at Pratt Institute and received his BFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in 2023. Working across printmaking and photography, Fang uses processes including screenprinting, lithography, etching, and digital image-making. His work often begins with photographs taken from everyday surroundings and travels, with particular attention to natural forms, architecture, light, and color. Through digital and print processes, he transforms these images into works that move between photography and printmaking.
Artist statement
My work begins with photography and with things I notice in everyday life: light, color, space, and forms that make me stop and look again. A photograph is usually the starting point rather than the finished work. I experiment with it in Photoshop, then decide whether the image should become a CMYK screenprint, a photo-plate print, an etching, or remain a photograph. The image begins with my way of seeing, but it does not end there. My choices remain in the photograph, its transformation, and the final print, but I do not want to determine what the viewer must find in it. Someone may see an organ where I photographed ice, or a universe where I photographed a jellyfish. The work carries something of me while also making room for someone else. What I see is not necessarily what another person sees. That difference matters to me. What the image becomes exists somewhere between the two.
